CSIRO Mineral Resources is seeking a motivated Research Engineer to join the Mining team. In this role, you will integrate work across the value chain and contribute to the impact statements for sustainable mining systems, water, energy and environment and orebody knowledge.

The role also involves works related to the development of new mining methods such as in-situ mining of critical minerals to move toward zero-entry mining and reduce the mining footprint. You will demonstrate technical knowledge of the mining and processing operations and the requirements for integration between upstream and downstream processes.

Your duties will include:

  • Incorporate novel approaches into scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing, and further research.
  • Develop projects and research the implementation of new and existing mine concepts and optimisation for converting resources to reserve.
  • Conduct research for energy efficient mining using techno-economic analysis, data analytics, experimental and optimisation techniques.
  • Work with Mining Engineers, Blasting, Geomechanics, and processing researchers to consider rock breakage, mine stability, and new, energy-efficient, processing options.
  • Initiate, and support the implementation of the selective mine of the future.
  • Develop the mining aspects of the novel and in-situ recovery hydrometallurgical systems and maintain an international community interest group.

Location: Brisbane – Pullenvale, Queensland
Salary: AU$105k - AU$114k per annum plus, up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  1. A Ph.D. (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as Mining, Processing, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Sciences, and other related branches of science and engineering such as Civil Engineering
  2. Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative, and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  3. A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications, or inventorship on patent applications.
  4. Research experience in statistics and/or data analytics
  5. Demonstrated ability to perform techno-economic analysis for engineering projects
  6. Project management in a mining or engineering consulting environment.
  7. A current driver’s license.

Desirable

  1. Practical experience on a mine site or in an engineering consultancy
  2. Research and practical experience applying knowledge of the effect of electro-chemical processes
  3. Knowledge of mine design, and software or demonstrated ability to learn software and new skills

Eligibility
