Questions are being asked about underground work at the controversial Carmichael coal mine.

Adani’s Australian branch Bravus has received an Environmental Protection Order concerning the proposed Carmichael mine expansion in Central Queensland.

Bravus provided new information indicating that future underground mining may affect the nearby Doongmabulla Springs, which are important wetlands.

As a result, Bravus is required to conduct further investigation into the impact of future underground mining on the springs, and is not permitted to commence underground mining until a review is provided to and approved by the Department of Environment and Science.

The department is reviewing the current report and has sought advice from CSIRO and Geoscience Australia.

The Carmichael mine already in operation does not impact the springs.

Bravus has committed to conducting additional work to ensure that future underground mining plans comply with regulatory conditions.

The mine received final approvals in 2019 after nearly a decade of planning and political debate.
