What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Network Engineers - Network Operations Team (Band 6 & Band 7).

Chief Information Officer Branch (CIO) provides critical ICT infrastructure and services to AFP members in support of Policing for a safer Australia. The Network Operations team is responsible for the design, provision, and support of secure and robust AFP network connectivity both in Australia and in overseas post locations.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a multi-disciplined team in a dynamic mixed technology environment. The successful applicant will enjoy exposure to a wide variety of technologies including WAN, LAN and wireless, data Centre networks, Internet gateway and DMZ, load balancing and software defined networks. Some roles include an out-of-hours technical response and the opportunity for domestic and international travel.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

Network Engineers and Senior Network Engineers will work under the broad direction of the Network Operations Team Leader to deliver all team responsibilities.

Key tasks and duties are:

  • Sustain, enhance and manage critical infrastructure in LAN/WAN, cloud, internet and data communications network environments.
  • Diagnose and resolve problems quickly and be able to communicate outcomes with technical users.
  • Perform troubleshooting and incident response, with root cause identification and timely resolution of network problems.
  • Plan and complete routine preventative maintenance and upgrade of network infrastructure.
  • Proactive monitoring and analysis to enhance stability and availability of the network.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and work responsively in a team environment.

In addition to the above, Senior Network Engineers (Band 7) will also:

  • Assist in identifying trends and support continuous service improvement to the benefit of the AFP.
  • Assist in the contribution to network design, strategic and technical direction, advice and planning.
  • Mentor and develop the technical capability of colleagues within the Network Operations team.

Essential Requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • You must be willing to relocate to Canberra, ACT.
  • Has contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role.
  • Experience and skill in the management, configuration, and troubleshooting of enterprise networks.
  • Relevant qualification/s or extensive experience and knowledge.

Experience as a Network Engineer including expertise in one or more of the following technologies:

  • Cloud Networking – Azure and AWS
  • Software Defined Networking – Aruba SD-WAN and VMWare NSX T
  • Gateway and Data Center Networking
  • Campus (LAN/WAN) Networking – Routing, Switching and Wireless
  • Networking Security - Firewalls and VPNs

Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:

  • Experience with automation, scripting, and programming (e.g. Python, Ansible, Linux)
  • Professional industry certification
  • Working knowledge of the Information Security Manual (ISM) and Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF)

Additional Information

  • These positions are AFP Band Level 6 and 7. 
  • This position has been advertised in multiple locations however, the role is located in Canberra, ACT. Successful applicants must be willing to relocate to Canberra, ACT.
  • Proof of a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used) will be required if an offer of employment is made.
