The Opportunity

The SKA Observatory is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKA Observatory is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The Deployment and Maintenance Manager will be integral to delivering the SKA-Low Telescope. You will lead the team responsible for assembly, deployment, and integration of the telescope stations, and set up the inaugural team of technicians. As the telescope is built, your team will become responsible for maintenance of the system on site. This start-up stage role requires autonomous and adaptable expertise in maintenance strategy, critical decision-making, and handling evolving project requirements. 

Your duties will include:

• Lead and coach a 20-person team in the assembly, deployment, integration and maintenance of low frequency radio telescope stations. As construction progresses, manage the team to become focussed on supervision of contracted labour and station integration. 
• Develop and implement assembly and integration strategies to optimize the SKA-Low telescope's performance. 
• Deliver regular performance reports to management and stakeholders on assembly, deployment, integration and maintenance. 
• Monitor project activities for adherence to schedule and budget, initiating corrective actions as necessary. 
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of all project tasks, ensuring compliance.

Salary:  AU$121,455 - AU$142,321 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

 Essential

• Candidates must have a degree or equivalent experience. Demonstrated experience in managing deployment and maintenance for large-scale projects, showcasing an understanding of project management, maintenance strategies, and leadership in complex settings. 
• Proven experience in leading diverse teams in remote environments, preferably for management of large-scale or complex equipment. This includes overseeing team development, handling personnel issues, and adapting to unique challenges associated with remote settings. 
• Proven ability to develop and manage construction and maintenance schedules, effectively allocate resources, and balance competing priorities. 
• Excellent understanding of safety protocols, regulations, and best practice in facility operations . Demonstrated focus on the well-being of personnel, especially in remote environments. 
• Candidates should demonstrate the ability to write and edit clear, concise, and comprehensive technical documentation, reports, and procedural manuals. 
• A valid driver’s license.  

Desirable

• Familiarity with reliability engineering concepts, such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). 
• Prior experience in managing crises or unexpected challenges in remote environments, indicating resilience and decision-making under pressure. 
• A qualification in training and assessing, indicating the ability to foster team development and guide personnel effectively. 
• Previous experience in start-ups or similar fast-paced, evolving environments, indicating a high level of adaptability and entrepreneurial mindset.
