The Opportunity

  • Use your expertise to design and develop mechanical & electrical prototypes
  • Play a vital practical role in value-adding industry projects
  • Join the talented & supportive team at CSIRO – Australia's National Science Agency!

Are you experienced in designing and constructing mechatronic prototypes, and interested in advancing your skillset through exciting R&D projects? We are currently seeking a motivated Mechatronic Engineer to join our CSIRO Mineral Resources team in an exciting position, and it might be the next career step you’re looking for!

CSIRO Mineral Resources is one of the largest minerals research and development groups in the world, partnering with industry, government and other sectors to deliver breakthrough innovation and solutions across the minerals value chain. As a Mechatronic Engineer, you will join our dynamic ‘Electrical Connections’ team in Melbourne, and work across various projects that would deliver a significant future IP&L revenue stream to the CSIRO Mineral Resources Processing Program. With several core mineral processing technologies being developed, and a large number of opportunities being progressed with multiple clients in Australia and overseas, our team is currently working on enhancing this growth area by providing a mix of high-value add consulting, contracted experimental testing and longer-term co-investment prototype development & testing.

In this practical lab-based role, you will play a key role within the team, by undertaking a variety of tasks with high degree of specialisation, and bringing your Mechatronic engineering expertise and experimenting skills to draw, design, document and deliver mechanical and electrical prototypes for industry partners. You will be using your strong problem solving, teamwork and communication skills to collaborate with a range of internal and external stakeholders to analyse data, develop experiment designs, plan and conduct experimental testing campaigns, and present results to industry, scientific and non-scientific audiences. Being in this multi-faceted role, you will have the opportunity to travel to different client sites (mining sites, smelters, refineries, etc), and may also be involved in supervising student programs run by CSIRO. Therefore, a pre-employment medical and a WWCC would be necessary for this position.

If you are motivated by creating new things, experimentation, changing ideas/concepts based on new information & evidence, trying out different approaches, and contributing to making a real difference with your work, this would be an exciting and fulfilling role for you! CSIRO champions in providing a diverse and inclusive culture, supports flexible work arrangements, and offers you excellent professional development opportunities to grow your skills & career.

Your duties will include:

  • Designing and constructing mechanical & electrical prototypes for industry deployment (trials).
  • Overseeing the Mechatronic, Electronic and Software components of externally sub-contracted works for prototype development.
  • Supporting the Mechanical and Electrical engineering design of novel, complex experimental rigs, especially the data acquisition and control systems, including programming.
  • Data analysis including economic modelling, experimental design using detailed statistical methods, and report writing including preparation of papers and presentations for industry engagement.
  • Providing client on-site support for measurement campaigns and identification of follow-up opportunities.
  • Managing the day-to-day running of the laboratory including execution of larger scale experimental work, programming and adaptation of the control systems for new experimental campaigns, co-ordination of all maintenance and contractor works, facilitation of visits to the laboratory.
