The Opportunity

The ALA is Australia’s national biodiversity data infrastructure providing biodiversity data and related products and services to over 75,000 users in research, government, industry and to the public.  Funded under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and hosted by CSIRO, the ALA is the Australian node of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility.

The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), CSIRO is Australia most comprehensive source of biodiversity information and data. We are expanding and looking for talented full-stack developers to be part of our team delivering products that support the environment and the country.

Joining a team of approximately 50 people and using contemporary open-source products and cloud technologies, in this role you will:

  • Create, maintain and develop code to support ALA products, services and projects.
  • Undertake and practice contemporary software engineering practices.
  • Produce robust software which meets technical and non-technical requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with a team of product managers, research scientists and developers to meet project and product goals.

Your duties will include:

  • Create, develop and maintain high quality code that meets functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to solve technical problems and deliver to customer needs and expectations
  • Undertake best-practice software engineering practices including CI/CD, create and maintain unit, integration and functional tests and dev-ops practices.
  • Other duties as directed

Salary: AU$105,806 - AU$114,500 per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following languages: Java, Python, JavaScript or Groovy
  • Experience developing and managing software in a cloud environment, such as AWS, GCP, Azure or OpenStack
  • Experience with Linux OS
  • Working knowledge of relational and non-relational databases and SQL
  • Experience with git version control system (or equivalent)
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving issues to achieve desired results.

Desirable:

Experience with:

  • Configuration management or infrastructure as code tools, such as Ansible, Terraform, CloudFormation, Puppet or Chef
  • Agile methodologies
  • Front end technologies such as React, Vue.js, Knockout or Angular.
  • Cyber security concepts and best practices
  • Biodiversity data and/or GIS systems 
  • API Gateway, Cognito, Cloud watch or other AWS services.
  • CICD (Continuous Integration Continuous Deployment)
  • Search index technologies such as SOLR, Elastic or Amazon Cloud Search
