A postgraduate engineering program at the University of Sydney has received full accreditation from Engineers Australia, making it unique in Australian universities.

Engineers Australia, the industry peak governing body, said the Master of Professional Engineering (MPE) will help meet the growing demand from industry for qualified engineers.

Professor Archie Johnston, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and  Information Technologies and Chair of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) Education Forum said the accreditation of the MPE was an important step towards addressing the engineering skills shortage highlighted in a recent Senate Committee report.

"We created the program with a view to producing qualified engineers from a broader pool of applicants, graduates with knowledge and skills in related disciplines, particularly science.

"We also wanted to create opportunity for engineers to cross seamlessly into different engineering fields, and for overseas engineering graduates with non-accredited qualifications to enhance their qualification and practice engineering in Australia," says Professor Johnston.

The MPE now has fully accredited programs in Chemical and Biomolecular, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Power and Structural Engineering.
