A  Leighton Holdings Ltd and GE consortium has been awarded a $130 million contract to build the Mumbida wind farm south-east of Geraldton in Western Australia.

Subsidiary Leighton Contractors and GE expect the project, which they said will generate enough power for about 35,000 homes, to be completed by November 2012.

Verve Energy and Macquarie Capital are joint owners of the project.

The project will be delivered by Leighton Contractors and GE through a single Engineering, Procure, Construct (EPC) contract, comprising the wind turbine generators mounted on 85 metre towers, electrical and civil balance of plant and a 22kV/132kV substation. The full maintenance service agreement will be provided by GE for a 10-year period, immediately following practical completion.

Leighton has also announced it has appointed Craig van der Laan to the newly-created positions of Chief Risk Officer and Group General Counsel for the Leighton Group.

Leighton Holdings chief executive David Stewart said Mr van der Laan would manage and enhance the group's risk management systems and controls and the group's legal affairs.
