The NSW Government has approved one of the biggest wind farm projects in the country.

The $640 million Liverpool Range Wind Farm promises to provide enough power for up to 500,000 homes from 272 wind turbines.

It is the largest approved wind farm in NSW to date.

Epuron first proposed the project in 2011 but faced concerns from locals about the number and location of the wind turbines.

The company responded to the community’s fears by cutting 16 turbines out of its plans and reducing the number of proposed substations from six to four.

About 80 per cent of the project will sit within the Warrumbungle Shire.

“Most of the mountains around here have got something on them because we've got the observatory here in Coonabarabran so we're used to things on tops of hills,” Warrumbungle mayor Peter Shinton told reporters this week.

“This will be generating a fair bit of power into the state grid. I think it should be very welcomed by everybody.”

The wind farm will cover about 720 square kilometres, and is expected to create close to 800 jobs during its three-year construction phase.

Epuron says the project will help hit state and federal government renewable energy targets.
