The ACT Government has announced a $256 million injection for transport infrastructure in the Territory’s 2011-12 Budget with an aim to deliver ‘major upgrades to transport infrastructure across Canberra’.

The Territory’s Transport for Canberra strategy will involve the construction of a new $2.5 million Nourthbourne Avenue transitway, upgrading bus stations and the construction of the new Majura Parkway.

"Carrying over 30,000 vehicles per day, the project will separate public transport movements from private motor vehicle movements. This builds on the investment already provided for the feasibility, design and construction of a separated pedestrian and cyclist facility along the key route into Canberra City in last year's Budget," Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope announced.

The Budget will also deliver:

  • $150,000 to conduct a feasibility study on bus priority measures for the intersection of Barton Highway and Gundaroo Drive;
  • $1 million for the planning and design of a bus layover facility in the City; and
  • $200,000 to conduct a feasibility study to establish bus stops including passenger information on Adelaide Avenue.

Other transport-related Budget items include:

  • $6 million for the provision of a pedestrian bridge to provide a safer means for students to cross the busy Drakeford Drive;
  • $1 million to upgrade 250 bus stops to meet disability standards;
  • $1.5 million toward intersection upgrades for West Belconnen to meet the demand of increased traffic in new suburb developments such as West Macgregor;
  • $3.7 million for the upgrade of Woden Bus Depot as part of Transport for Canberra. The upgraded depot will allow for the delivery of additional and more frequent services to the Canberra community; and
  • $4.4 million for the upgrade of fuel facilities at Tuggeranong and Belconnen bus depots.
