What is the role?
Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Senior Technical Specialist Covert & Technical Operations - Southern Command.
Technical Specialists contribute to and lead the development of technical capabilities for Covert and Technical Operations by providing expert close operational support. Technical specialists lead the research, development and maintenance of electronic surveillance equipment and provide advanced technical assistance during the deployment of capabilities in support of AFP Operations.
As a Team Member in the AFP you will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
The Senior Technical Specialist will be responsible for:
- Providing high level technical support in support of the AFP’s mission;
- Developing team members and fulfilling a guiding, mentoring and advisory role;
- Undertaking a range of operational support tasks;
- Undertaking project or research work to support AFP business;
- Utilising AFP Information Systems to interrogate, input, collate and retrieve data for operational support; and
- Maintaining currency and subject matter expertise through ongoing professional development and learning opportunities outside the formal education process.
This role requires in-depth knowledge of and/or experience with one or more of the following:
- Expertise in a specialist discipline relevant to Technical Surveillance Operations (IT, Electronics, Communications);
- Knowledge and experience in project management;
- Significant knowledge of commercial electronic technologies including wireless communications, computer operating systems, computer hardware and computer networks;
Essential Requirements
- You must be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- A Negative Vetting 2 security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
- Successfully undertake a Psychological Suitability Assessment.
- Formal tertiary or trade qualifications or equivalent industry experience in any of the fields of engineering, electronics, information technology/computer science.
- Practical industry or government experience in any industry related to the above qualifications.
- Ability to work on-call, shifts as operationally required, and undertake domestic and international travel.
- Current driver’s licence.
Desirable Requirements
The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
- Contemporary knowledge and experience relevant to the role;
- A combination of policing/defence experience and relevant programming qualifications;
- The ability and willingness to undertake all mandatory training requirements necessary to be sworn in as an 'AFP operationally qualified special member'; and
- A TSPV Security Clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Additional Information
- This position is an AFP Band 7
- Applicants may also be required to complete a technical test and interview.
- Positions are based in Melbourne and relocations costs will not be covered by the AFP.
- This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement 2017- 2020, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their Base Salary which will count as salary for superannuation. The Commissioner has the authority to remove a composite from a role.
- AFP employees are required to have received a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used). Satisfactory proof of vaccination status will be required at the time an offer of employment is made.
