Toilet amenities can make or break a tourist spot, but rarely are they the sole reason for a visit.

However, that may be about to change, with a Tasmanian council proposing an incredible “loo with a view”.

The Waratah Wynyard mayor has proposed building a toilet on the spectacular Table Cape in Tasmania's north-west, giving a panoramic view out from its position 180 metres above sea level, overlooking the Wynyard coastline.

The cape is home to a renowned tulip farm and an 1800s-era lighthouse, but lacks public toilets.

The council want to address the lack of amenities, but not all are in favour of the dramatic dunny plan.

“The plan is to have it fully suspended and straight down is the ocean,” Mayor Robby Walsh said

“It's the ideal spot for it, and the idea behind the loo with a view [is that it] would be a landmark to our area.

“Over the years we've had plenty of queries saying; ‘Why isn't there a toilet on Table Cape?’

“This idea, I think it would be a great attraction.

“We have tours of Table Cape lighthouse, tourists visit the area a lot and we have our tulip farm up there and we have the Tulip Festival that creates 20,000 people visiting our area that weekend.

“It's necessary to have a toilet on Table Cape, whichever way you look at it.”

The controversial commode has concerned Councillor Andrea Courtney.

“From Yolla down to Waratah it's almost God's country. To make us famous for a toilet I think undervalues the quality of the area,” she told reporters

“We obviously need toilets up there but we also need toilets up at Yolla, we've got a lot of areas that could do with a bit of extra infrastructure.”

She said the facility would cost tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance each year.

“I can't see there's a massive value in it when we could do so much better than being famous for a toilet.”

The council is yet to vote on an official proposal, but it has already been suggested that government funding will be available to build the facility.
