Experimental Scientist / Engineer - Pressure Standards, NMI

About the team

The National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division of the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science is Australia's peak measurement body responsible for biological, chemical, legal, physical and trade measurement.

NMI’s Pressure Standards Group maintains Australia’s primary standards of pressure and vacuum, providing Australia’s highest level calibration services that support calibration and testing laboratories and key users across Australia in areas such as advanced manufacturing, defence and aerospace. The team develops, validates and maintains measurement systems for pressure and vacuum standards, delivers calibration services to a wide range of users, provides solutions for measurement challenges involving pressure and vacuum, and transfers its knowledge to the user and metrology community both nationally and internationally.

What you will do

Working with the leading researchers in the field in Australia, you will:

  • deliver timely, high-quality calibrations of pressure and vacuum sensors and of similar measurement instruments under an ISO17025 quality system, and at the highest levels of accuracy achievable internationally
  • develop effective relationships with key stakeholders in industry and the research community through industry outreach, research collaborations and consultancies to provide national leadership on emerging trends in pressure metrology
  • use your broad physics and engineering skills to contribute both to the design and development of new standards facilities as well as maintenance and efficiency improvements to existing systems
  • be actively involved in contributing to ongoing research to understand, quantify and reduce measurement uncertainties and validate new experimental techniques, for example, using your thermodynamics knowledge to developing quantitative mathematical models of mechanical and fluid dynamic systems.

In the longer term you will be expected to develop a deep and comprehensive knowledge of the field of pressure and vacuum measurement and of the operation, design and limitations of the latest commercial and research equipment. The position is on a trajectory to the position of Group Leader for NMI’s pressure team, including representing NMI and Australia on national and international technical and standards committees. You will be expected to identify opportunities to integrate the latest technical innovations in quantum and optical standards into the next generation of NMI’s primary standards for pressure and vacuum measurement.

Eligibility

The successful candidate will have a degree in Mechanical Engineering, or PhD (or equivalent experience) in Experimental Physics, with a strong mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics and automation component and several years of relevant experience.

To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian Citizens or eligible for Australian Citizenship.

Notes

This recruitment process is being used to fill a current ongoing Science & Technical Level 5 or 6 position. A merit pool may be established to fill future ongoing and non-ongoing Science & Technical Level 5 and 6 vacancies should they become available within 12 months from the date advertised. Non-ongoing opportunities may be offered for an initial period of up to 18 months with the possibility of extension (maximum 3 years).
