The Role
This position is part of an expanded Executive Level 2 classification. The successful applicant will be appointed to the Executive Level 2 classification level with a salary at the top of the Executive Level 2 range ($150,786). 

A temporary movement to the Executive Level 2.1 classification, may result in an enhanced salary offering on a temporary basis and reviewed annually. The Executive Director – Directorate of Navy Engineering (DNE) is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction to ensure a high level of integration and consistency across the Defence Engineering Function within Navy Engineering Branch.   

They will:

  • Exercise a significant degree of independence and perform an important leadership role by imparting DGENG-N strategic vision and mission on subordinate organisations as well as contributing to agency wide strategic planning. 
  • Apply superior engineering knowledge to ensure the Directorate of Navy Engineering operates within legislative regulatory systems and established principles within the defence engineering disciplines. 
  • Maintain awareness of the competitive market landscape, expansion opportunities and industry developments in order to ensure Navy continues to deliver best practice outcomes with leading edge technology.

About our Team
DNE is responsible for supporting the Director General Engineering Navy (DGENG-N) in the provision and retention of specialist technical and engineering knowledge, products and services.  DNE is responsible for the coordinated Navy Engineering Branch (NEB) input to programs and projects and ensuring that NEB is represented on all Naval and Defence matters requiring Navy Engineering expertise throughout all phases of the Defence Capability Life Cycle.  

The DNE is wholly customer focused and exists to continuously deliver products and services when required. DNE consists of seven directorates, which are split into two Centre’s of Expertise (CoE) Directorates and five Directorates that are aligned to the Navy Capability Domains.  These areas consist of Australian Public Service, Australian Defence Force and Industry Engineers.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge relating to the methodology, systems and procedures within the engineering management function and have the ability to translate this into strategy.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be responsible for influencing and developing strategies, policies, priorities and operational practices in support of Defence objectives based on high level decision making and judgement. 
  • Provide strategic advice to senior management and stakeholders as well as leading and assuming accountability for very complex work or work programs that have strategic, political and operational significance.
  • Understand the importance of effective supervision and mentoring for staff, and be able to balance priorities between client needs and underpinning research. 
  • Have a high level of initiative and aptitude for working in a multidisciplinary environment, and be able to develop and sustain external linkages with industry, academia, and international organisations. 
  • Have superior verbal and written communication skills, and will be committed to ongoing professional development within naval engineering disciplines
