The Role

As the Acoustic Materials Specialist, you will contribute to the development and scientific understanding of advanced materials for marine acoustic applications.

Under limited supervision, you will carry out modelling and computer-based simulations of acoustic interactions with marine materials for Defence applications and perform experimental measurements to verify the modelling predictions.

In this role your responsibilities will include:

  • Develop or implement physical models of interactions between acoustic energies and materials in the marine environment, using numerical modelling methods to characterise acoustic material behaviour.
  • Design and undertake precision laboratory measurements using a range of advanced acoustic experimental systems.
  • Acquire and analyse data and communicate the results via oral presentations and written reports.

About our Team
DST Group Platforms provides technologies and scientific and technical (S&T) expertise to deliver the capability edge to the warfighter and enhance the operational performance and survivability of Defence platforms.

The Acoustic Signature Management branch of Platforms provides Australia’s primary capability for the management and control of acoustic signatures of Defence platforms and the hydrodynamic, propulsion, and manoeuvring performance of ships and submarines.

The Acoustic Material Systems team carries out S&T to enable Defence to develop and apply innovative materials technologies for acoustic signature management of current and future maritime platforms. The group also draws on its multidisciplinary materials science expertise to assure safety, minimise cost of ownership, and maximise availability of Defence platforms.

The team has significant expertise in maritime composite materials as well as in advanced techniques for materials characterisation.

Our Ideal Candidate
We are seeking a capable and enthusiastic scientist or engineer who would thrive in the Defence Science environment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of high academic achievement, as well as proven experience in physics-based modelling and experimental science, particularly with a background in materials or acoustics.

Their verbal and written English will be at a high level. They will have excellent communication skills, with experience in presentations, demonstrations, and written work.

They will seek opportunities to improve themselves, and to expand their knowledge in both their technical field, as well as how their work contributes to the team and the broader organisation.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have a:

  • Demonstrated ability to apply and develop physics-based and mathematical models to problems in the physical sciences, and proven experience in computational modelling techniques.
  • Proven experience in performing precise experimental measurements, and to generate, analyse, and report on experimental results
  • Demonstrated ability to work under limited supervision, and in a research team environment
  • Proven ability to communicate advanced concepts and technical results to a range of audiences within the team and external stakeholders.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 18 December 2022
