The Role

The Australian Naval Classification Authority (ANCA) is responsible for establishing, managing and continuously improving a system of naval classification (the ANC Framework) to assure the seaworthiness of naval vessels operating in defence of Australia.

As a newly established Defence agency, ANCA requires an experienced Engineering Manager to support the Assistant Secretary of ANCA with the establishment and management of ANCA Branch functions.

Major duties performed by the Director ANC Framework include, but are not limited to:

  • Accountable for the development and maintenance of ANCA Policy and Publications
  • Accountable for the development, maintenance and governance for ANC Framework Initial Classification components including the ANC Rules, Basis, Record, and Certification
  • Accountable for the development, maintenance and governance for ANC Framework Continuing Classification components including non-compliance management
  • Accountable for the development, maintenance and governance of a framework that recognises or authorises agencies to provide technical services and generate permissible evidence in support of the design and construction of Naval Vessels
  • Accountable for the development, maintenance, governance and assessment of ANCA delegations
  • Accountable for the establishment of the ANC Rules Technical Board and sub level Working Groups
  • Accountable for the delivery of ANCA Business Operations functions including the management of the ANCA Sovereign Industry Partner contract
  • Responsible for the provision of ANCA professional and expert support to Defence and Defence Industry on the ANCA Framework
  • Responsible for the management of key ANCA internal and external stakeholders and accountable for the development of communication, training and education material

About our Team
The Australian Naval Classification Authority (ANCA) is responsible for establishing, managing and continuously improving a system of naval classification (the ANC Framework) to assure the seaworthiness of naval vessels operating in the defence of Australia. 

As a newly-established Defence agency, the ANCA is undergoing establishment and will include a diverse geographic workforce based in Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. 

The ANC Authority has engaged a long term Sovereign Industry Partner, Bureau Veritas, to support ANCA work.

Our Ideal Candidate
As an Engineering Manager the Director ANC Framework will be:

  • Accountable for providing leadership and direction to ensure a high-level of integration and consistency across Defence engineering and project functions.
  • Accountable for managing and leading a team, including providing clear and consistent communication, setting clear performance and behavioural standards, managing performance, delegating responsibility and guiding and developing people.
  • Accountable for managing allocated resources, setting work area priorities, workflows, developing strategies and evaluating business outcomes.
  • Accountable for exercising assigned engineering authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations.
  • Drive the delivery of complex engineering, business and project functions, systems and innovative activities.
  • Translate and shape strategy into operational goals for the development, integration and evaluation of Defence project outcomes.
  • Draw upon knowledge and expertise of all relevant engineering disciplines, business and operational context to identify issues and uncertainties and address appropriately.
  • Work collaboratively, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and influence the work of teams to ensure successful delivery of project, system or platform outputs.
  • Motivate and mentor developing engineers, aligning complementary skills and allocate resources in a manner that delivers results.
  • Evaluate engineering and project activities to understand critical factors for success and engage in innovative solutions to ensure that delivered materiel meets requirements.
  • Lead and ensure safety aspects of Defence business and materiel systems are considered and incorporated into engineering and project functions.
  • Engage and influence Defence senior leadership
