The Role

The work of the Configuration Management sub-function in Defence is to provide configuration knowledge to support technical and engineering activities, and ensure quality and compliance with appropriate technical delegations commensurate with relevant legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks. The Configuration Officer will engage with stakeholders, investigate, report, develop, evaluate, advise and implement policies, processes, procedures, practice and manage resources specific to assurance and data specifications to support Defence capability.

Within the Configuration Management sub-function, an APS6 Configuration Officer is accountable under broad direction to undertake complex technical configuration activities. They will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with the Defence mission and business objectives. They will work independently having some authority and discretion to investigate information from diverse sources and explore innovative approaches to support the longer-term business objectives.

The Configuration Officer will use their initiative and experience to research, analyse, plan, review, and adjust priorities and work activities to meet business outcomes. They will undertake objective, systematic analysis and draw accurate conclusions based on evidence providing detailed technical, professional and procedural advice in relation to complex technical configuration activities. The Configuration Officer will have considerable stakeholder engagement and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders' expectations to develop and communicate a clear understanding of the methodology and practices to achieve outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development. The Configuration Officer may be a team coach or lead a team and is expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work group. They may exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes. You will work within a uniformed and non-uniformed team with opportunities to work flexible hours.

About our Team
The Hydrographic, Meteorological and Oceanographic Group is responsible for the Capability monitoring and management of the Hydrographic Meteorological and Oceanographic Force Elements (HMGRP FE), with the primary focus on governance, capability management and audit of all units. The HMGRP consists of a Headquarters (HQ) and five distinct Defence Elements including two Leeuwin Class Hydrographic Ships (HS), two Paluma Class Survey Motor Launches (SMLs) and the Maritime Geospatial Warfare Unit (MGWU). Located at HMAS Cairns, you will enjoy working in a friendly, team-oriented environment.

You are a motivated professional, seeking to work both autonomously and within a team as required. You will be an excellent communicator, be able to confidently engage stakeholders, and have confidence in your ability to independently assess and provide recommendations relevant to the roles listed below. Previous experience as a Configuration Officer (or similar) is desirable but not mandatory. An APS6 Configuration Officer may perform the following roles:

  • Perform complex technical configuration activities and associated tasks working to agreed priorities and outcome.
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge and experience to develop and review technical packages.
  • Apply technical knowledge and experience to identify risks and uncertainties and take these into account in planning, decision making and priority setting.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with team members, actively participate in team work and motivate and mentor developing technicians.
  • Tailor communication style and language to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assess technical packages including scoping, planning and reviewing of packages and provide recommendations for consideration.
  • Assess technical packages, reports, processes and product and equipment performance to meet specified requirements, provide recommendations for continuous improvement and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure safety aspects of Defence capability are considered and incorporated into technical configuration activities and tasks.
  • Manage technical knowledge of relevant processes, packages, product and equipment.
  • Fluent in the use of the Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel and Outlook).Fluent in the use of the Configuration Management Tool – Unified (CMT-U) is desirable otherwise there is a requirement to be trained in both CMT-U Thin and Rich Client within three months of joining.
