The Role

Responsibilities and specific duties included:

  • Planning the integration of newly acquired platforms into ADF systems and networks in support of the MPR and AISREW programs. The span of responsibilities includes RF communications, SATCOM, terrestrial ICT network integration (including Unclassified, protected, secret and Top Secret), spectrum management, Tactical Data Links, and ISR systems integration to the appropriate intelligence community agencies.
  • Leading the C4ISREW and Network Integration team, planning and managing deliverables required to support requirements and acquisition phase milestones, and maintaining effective relationships with Australian and international stakeholders. The C4ISREW Engineering Manager is accountable to the FISRSPO Project Engineering Manager for ensuring communication links are fit for purpose and can support safe flight operations
  • Management of relevant FIC elements, managing engineering deliverables and providing expert technical advice within the C4ISREW and Network Integration domain.
  • Design decisions and endorsement of stakeholder plans and architecture, system requirements and materiel decisions involving local and international partners in order to meet capability requirements. These decisions will have serious impacts for Australia's future airborne ISR capabilities and safety for first of type platforms.
  • Function lead for C4ISREW and Network Integration within FISRSPO.
  • Lead, plan and deliver critical and complex to very complex engineering and project activities and provide advice in all relevant engineering disciplines and management systems under broad direction.
  • Managing a team, managing allocated resources, setting work area priorities, managing workflows, developing strategies and evaluating business outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively, communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and influence the work of teams to ensure successful delivery of project, system or platform outputs.
  • Lead and ensure safety aspects of Defence materiel systems are considered and incorporated into engineering and project activities.
  • Takes the initiative to resolve issues by identifying and developing ideas through analysis of alternative courses of action and their implications.

About our Team

The Future Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems Program Office (FISRSPO) is the acquisition agency for Air7000 Phase 1B (MQ-4C Triton Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) and Air 7003 Ph1 (MQ-9 Armed Medium Altitude Long Endurance Remotely Piloted Aircraft System). FISRPO is an integrated workplace with approximately 90 personnel from ADF, APS and Team Nova. As an organisation committed to flexible work practices, FISRSPO has a number of personnel who work remotely or are on flexible work arrangements.

Each FIRSPO Integrated Project Team (IPT) is responsible for the overall integration of all elements of the Fundamental Inputs to Capability (FIC), to ensure seamless transition to service of the acquired capability, enabling achievement of Initial Operational Capability (IOC), and Final Operational Capability (FOC) on time and on budget.

The acquisition boundary of FISRSPO includes selected aircraft, as well as training, infrastructure upgrades, logistics, engineering and associated maintenance support systems. FISRSPO is part of Aerospace Surveillance & Response Branch (ASR) Air Domain.

FISRSPO aims to deliver future intelligence, surveillance and response capabilities programs in order to provide the joint force with an edge. More specifically, FISRSPO:

  • Understands ISR capabilities and how they are utilised to create joint effects.
  • Is connected to the national innovation ecosystem and industrial base which enables FISRSPO to provide leading edge ISR technology.
  • Is experienced in acquiring strategic technology from the US and UK through cooperative arrangements.
  • Is experienced in developing solutions which seamlessly integrate with the joint force and key coalition partners.
  • Are leaders in regulatory frameworks for safe operation of ISR capabilities and we are comfortable working with ADF regulatory bodies to drive change to accommodate emerging technology.
  • Delivers solutions which optimise resources (people, facilities, and budget) and risks.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate should possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and be able to lead and influence outcomes within a team environment. Ideally, the successful applicant should be able to demonstrate previous experience working within Defence or Defence Industry; and be an Australian Citizen in order to meet Defence security requirements.

The EL1 Engineering Manager within the Engineering Management Unit (EMU) will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a leadership role. They will exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice, and will have in-depth knowledge of the engineering and project function, and be responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that function.

The EL1 Engineering Manager will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices in order to achieve outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development of their work area, as such, the role requires superior people management skills and knowledge to lead a high performing and cohesive team.
