The Role
The Directorate Navy Engineering is seeking a Communications Network engineer with a good understanding of deployed communications network infrastructure to undertake engineering work to support the acquisition and sustainment of submarines, combatant and support ships for the Royal Australian Navy. This position will provide advice on IT system designs for Navy and assessments of the suitability to support Naval platforms in their specified roles. This specialist will understand how to apply the requirements, specifications and standards in order to achieve a functioning system of systems and be involved in witnessing of tests to ensure compliance with the agreed specifications. In addition the roles will require considerable hands on work in the Navy’s research and development laboratories to investigate and confirm the appropriate configurations and interfaces required to ensure compatibility across the fleet and ensure interoperability.

To perform effectively in the role a level of on-the-job training will be provided as well as the provision of general and specialist IT training will be expected. However, a basic understanding of network engineering elements such as routing packages, topologies, switches, firewalls, implementation of quality of service and virtual machine deployment would be required. Technical document analysis, assessment and reporting skills is an important element of this role, for which excellent IT and communications skills in all formats is essential.

About our Team
Data Networks Cell supports Navy’s Director General of Engineering, by managing an enterprise Engineering Local Area Network and through the provision of Subject Matter Expertise on Navy Command Control and Communications including Tactical Data Links for Navy projects in order to ensure a secure and robust Defence Information Environment at sea. DNC’s Emanation Security Team provides a specialised test capability that involves risk assessment through the measurement and analysis of ships classified systems.

The Cells support Director General Navy Engineering and have a range of highly skilled engineers to provide expertise and advice on a range of deployed network capabilities in support of Navy and projects involved in the design and upgrading of systems within the fleet and during international exercises in order to ensure a secure and robust Defence Information Environment at sea.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will need to; be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision, be able to positively engage and negotiate with a range of individuals, be able to articulate issues and options for resolution in a complex test environment, have a very high attention to detail, and have the ability to adapt to variable conditions while troubleshooting issues in a simulated environment.

This role will require the applicant to be able to obtain an NV1 security clearance, which will require the provision of personal information for assessment by AGSVA.
