The Role

Under broad direction from the Group Leader, the Chemical and Biological (CB) Protection Discipline Lead will contribute specialist expertise and inspire a team of scientists, engineers and technicians to achieve outcomes for Defence. Your team will deliver scientific outcomes and informed advice to ensure that Defence and National Security agencies can mitigate the threat posed by CB threats by understanding current, in-service, and future individual and collective protection systems and technologies.

As Discipline Lead, you will need sound knowledge in a relevant field of chemistry or material sciences and will understand the approaches and technologies applicable to protection; including the ability and willingness to work safely with highly toxic chemicals.

As part of the leadership team, you will contribute to strategy development, resource allocation and build collaboration networks. A key focus will be leading the team to develop skills and work programs that deliver and contribute to the Science and Technology Strategy for Defence 2020-30.

About our Team

Land Division leads the impetus for innovation within Australian land force operations by providing science and technology advice about equipment, personnel and processes utilised by the land force. The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Defence Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) within Land Division drives the application of science and technology to solve problems to deliver solutions for the Australian Government and the ADF to prevent, counter and mitigate the effects of CBRN agents. 

The CB Protection Team delivers scientific and technical advice regarding current and future capability for protective clothing and equipment against current and emerging CB threats. The team’s core role is delivering the sovereign capability for the assessment of the performance of this equipment. Our advice supports current operations, training and provides smart buyer advice to acquisition programs. The team also investigates innovative ways to improve protection capability through the development of new technologies and concepts.

  • Develop and sustain strong relationships and collaborations with industry, academic and international government agency partners, and create opportunities for your team to work cooperatively.
