The Role

As the Discipline Lead Torpedo Guidance and Control Technology Development, you will lead, supervise, mentor and develop a multidisciplinary team who conduct research and provide advice to Defence on torpedo guidance and control technologies with an emphasis on detection, classification, localisation, and sensor control technologies for the MK48 Heavyweight Torpedo, the new Advance Lightweight Torpedo, and related systems.

You will collaborate with other DSTG researchers and teams working in related areas, and apply knowledge of sonar related detection, classification, localisation and sensor control to develop technologies to improve torpedo operational performance, and communicate and deliver these outcomes to our USA partners in MK48 Heavyweight and the new Advanced Lightweight Torpedo programs. The scope of work includes working with national and international stakeholders, academia, industry, and government laboratories. You will be required to plan, commit, phase and expend allocated funds for science and technology plans.

About our Team

Undersea Weapon Systems Group within Maritime Division undertakes research and development in support of Defence’s undersea weapons capabilities, including Defence’s science and technology developments with our USA alliance partners for the MK 48 Heavyweight torpedo Armaments Cooperative Program and Advanced Lightweight Torpedo Project Arrangement. The group is also involved in submarine and surface ship torpedo Defence and countermeasure systems, and supports operations, trials, and acquisition activities.

Our Ideal Candidate

The Discipline Lead Torpedo Guidance and Control Technology Development will demonstrate knowledge and experience in some or all of the following areas:

  • Detection, classification, localisation and sensor control technologies.
  • Systems engineering and technology development.
  • Maritime platforms, weapon systems and tactics
  • Torpedo, torpedo defence systems, torpedo countermeasure technologies and threats
  • Modelling and simulation of undersea warfare and weapons systems.

The Discipline Lead Torpedo Guidance and Control Technology Development will have experience in leading and manage a research work program, building partnerships with other researchers, and developing partnerships with external agencies in Government, Academia, Industry, and internationally with our USA collaborative partners.

They will work under limited direction, with initiative and self-motivation, and possess the ability to work in an environment with evolving requirements, scope, and priorities. They will be accountable for delivering the work program, providing high quality and specialist advice and delivering real capability outcomes for Defence.
