The Role
Research Engineering (RE) are seeking a suitably qualified and motivated Materials Research Specialist dedicated to developing a career in miniaturised electronic, electro-optic, nano science and materials research areas (including miniaturised RF hardware). The successful applicant will undertake design, integration, and assembly of complex micro-scale systems and devices.

The role requires knowledge of microelectronics design and integration of micro-scale devices into larger systems under limited supervision (Mask design, physical & chemical vapor deposition and material characterisation using x-ray diffractometer, SEM, EDX and VSM). The scope of work in this field is growing which will require you to provide high level of technological advice to DST scientists in the field of materials while collaboratively working on research elements of high value projects (e.g. magnetostrictive material, energetic materials).

Position Duties
The Materials Research specialist applicant will be expected to apply their knowledge and experience in materials science research and micro and nano engineering to:

  • Lead the development of new capabilities, including equipment, processes in material science research.
  • Lead technically complex projects and provide high level advice to technical issues in fabrication, assembly and testing of the fabricated devices.
  • Lead materials science research in areas of composite thinfilm development, magnetostrictive materials, and metrology.
  • Operate physical & chemical vapor deposition equipment, X-ray diffractometer, Vibration Sample Magnetometer, scanning electron microscope and metrology equipment.
  • Foster innovation and develop products from concept to industry transition.
  • Work with other areas of RE to support multidisciplinary projects with Micro and Nano Engineering contribution.
  • Develop strong collaborative relationships with stakeholders, and promote capabilities to support Defence S&T program
  • Develop and maintain strong external relationships through collaborative activities as part of the Australian Micro and Nano engineering community and leverage academia, external agencies and industry to deliver S&T outcomes.
