Sonar Systems Engineer

APS 4/5-6 (S&T Level 3-4)
$67,100 - $92,150 (plus super)
Edinburgh - SA

The Role

As a sonar systems engineer, you will work as part of the Sonar Systems Analysis team to conduct engineering and scientific activities relating to sonar sensing systems such as platform mounted sonar systems, fixed seabed arrays and distributed sensor fields for detecting submarines. These activities include data processing and analysis, electronic design and construction, software development and trial participation.

You will need to have, or develop, expertise in sonar technologies and systems specific to Anti-Submarine Warfare, supported by on-the-job learning and formal training. You will contribute to Maritime Division’s field trials capability and participate in at-sea data collection activities; including the analysis of experimental data. You will work closely with Australian Navy and Air Force clients, and collaborate with international Defence agencies and industry on sonar technology projects. You will communicate, document and report on scientific and engineering outcomes to DSTG, Defence clients and other stakeholders.

About our Team

The Sonar Technology & Systems (STS) branch of Maritime Division works closely with the ADF to provide support to in-service and future sonar systems and conducts world leading research and development of undersea sensors and sensing systems for Anti-Submarine Warfare.

The Undersea Sensing Systems and Experimentation group within STS includes scientists, engineers and technicians working on the development and analysis of sonar sensing and processing technologies and concepts to enhance the Anti-Submarine Warfare capability of Navy and Air Force. This includes undertaking timely analysis and developing technical tools to support current and future sonar systems; investigating novel processing, classification, planning and display techniques and systems, and conducting experimentation at sea to demonstrate concepts, collect, and analyse scientific data.

As a member of the Sonar Systems Analysis discipline, you will contribute to the development, analysis and support of state-of-the-art sonar technologies and systems relevant to Australian Navy and Air Force capability in Anti-Submarine Warfare. This will include working with Defence to perform scientific analysis on in service and future sonar systems, developing software tools to support the effective employment of sonar systems, designing experiments and participating in trials at sea.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of sensor signal processing and the professional development of software for both scientific analysis and technical applications.

You will have experience coding in languages such as Matlab, Octave or Python, and C++ and demonstrated skills in signal processing, such as beamforming, filtering and classification, ideally with a Sonar or Acoustics background and an interest in further developing these skills.

Other desirable proficiencies include systems analysis, experimental design, statistics, sensitivity analysis, data science, algorithm design and evaluation. Some knowledge of acoustics, oceanography, numerical modelling and RF systems would also be valuable.

You will need to be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to stakeholders, senior management and research teams including preparing documentation from software architecture to S&T publications.

Application Closing Date: Monday 1 March 2021
