Submarine Snort Noise Program Manager (NOG)

EL 2 (S&T Level 6)

$118,376 - $142,087 (plus Super)
Fishermans Bend, VIC

Your Role

As the Submarine Snort Noise Program Manager, you will be responsible for coordinating DSTG’s science and technology (S&T) activities related to understanding and mitigating snort noise acoustic signature. You will work with researchers in DSTG, academia and industry, and with the COLLINS and Future Submarine Programs and others in Defence, to shape, organise and oversee these activities.

The S&T activities cover the range of noise generation and underwater acoustic radiation mechanisms associated with running the diesel generators of a conventional submarine in snorting mode as well as associated noise control measures. You will help identify new activities needed in the program and stand them up, and provide regular reporting on the status of these activities to various stakeholders. You will also contribute to national and international collaborations where relevant. This opportunity is offered for a 3 year term.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a person with strong science research or technical experience in acoustics and vibration, and experience with diesel engines, who can understand the broad range of topics involved in addressing submarine snort noise signature, and who has experience in managing a program of work. The right person will have demonstrated ability to lead technical activities, work with teams and produce outcomes with impact. These qualities mean you will be able to identify the challenges and opportunities in a range of areas relevant to snort noise; and to initiate programs and collaborations in those areas to address snort noise signature as a whole. You will have strong written and verbal communication skills that will enable you to present program outcomes to our Defence partners at different levels of technical depth as appropriate.

Our Team

The successful applicant will be based in the Acoustic Signature Control group, one of the groups in the Maritime Division of DSTG. We work across a number of science areas relevant to the underwater acoustic signatures of maritime vessels. We make use of a variety of computer-based tools for modelling and analysis, and have experimental facilities such as a comprehensive range of sound and vibration measuring equipment, a large water tank and an anechoic chamber. Together with our Defence, university, industry and international partners, we help ensure the operational effectiveness of current and future submarines and surface ships for Navy.

Application Closing Date: Monday 22 February 2021
