Your Role

  • Perform critical and complex engineering activities and provide advice in the field of communication engineering under broad direction.
  • Apply engineering knowledge and experience to identify risks and uncertainties and take these into account in planning, decision making and priority setting.
  • Demonstrate communication engineering knowledge and provide advice and recommendations on the development of advancements to established engineering principles, techniques, methods and regulations.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with team members, actively participate in team work and motivate and mentor developing engineers.
  • Tailor communication style and language to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assess technical and design packages including scoping, planning, reviewing, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions.
  • Evaluate that the delivered materiel meets requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks, provide recommendations and contribute to the implementation of actions.

Our Team

DSO Satellite coordination team is responsible for assuring spectrum access for Defence and allied nation space assets. The specialist team consist of experienced engineers with communications and electronics background having a sound understanding of current and emerging space communication concepts with an enthusiasm to work with regulatory matters.

The team engages with high profile projects acquiring satellite systems, provide spectrum planning guidance for satellite systems, spectrum certification of earth stations and space stations, conduct engineering assessment and provide frequency assignments to satellite networks and manages ICT systems supporting above activities. 

In providing through-life-support for Defence space assets team regularly engages with international regulatory bodies such as International Telecommunications Union (ITU), commercial and government satellite operators and international government spectrum management agencies.  Team members are expected to rapidly build expertise in satellite spectrum management and sustain long-term relationships with a broad range of stakeholders both in Australia and overseas. 

Our Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be required to perform technical analyses and to be able to negotiate with the satellite operators of other countries to ensure that current Defence satellites are able to operate without interference, and that sufficient satellite spectrum is secured to strategically meet future Defence requirements.  The successful candidate will also be required to liaise with various government departments to advocate for Defence on the technical and regulatory framework that supports Defence satellite systems in an environment whereby Defence is facing increasing competition for spectrum resources from both future proposed satellite systems and the ever-increasing trend for more spectrum for mobile broadband. 

Good technical and communication skills are therefore essential.  Opportunities will exist for international travel to support these objectives, including the potential for participating in International Telecommunication Union activities.
