The Role
The Destroyer System Program Office was established to facilitate transition of Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers from acquisition to sustainment and sustain these ships and associated shore facilities. In order to assure safety of DDG Platforms and Ship Staff, a DDG safety case was developed by AWD Alliance which was transitioned to DDSGPO for use and maintain currency during in-service sustainment. However, this safety case was developed in accordance with superseded Defence Technical Regulation – Navy requirements using 4x5 risk management matrix and ALARP principle which is non-compliant with current Defence Seaworthiness Management System (DSwMS) requirements.

This position will be responsible for providing governance and assurance of activities in relation to update of as-delivered safety case to meet DSwMS requirements using Harmonised Navy Risk Management (HNRM) System (5x5 matrix) and SFARP principle, development of operational safety risk assessments for DDGs, and generation and ongoing management of in–service DDG Safety Case. The Safety Engineer will perform a subject matter expert role and is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve very complex safety engineering work within an integrated workforce. They will require an in-depth knowledge of the safety engineering discipline and legislative frameworks and are responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that discipline.

The Safety Engineer will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to develop and communicate methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development of their work area.

Further this position will be responsible for ensuring DDG Enterprise’s compliance to WHS Act 2011.

The Destroyer System Program Office (DDGSPO) has been established to accept and sustain the Air Warfare Destroyers (AWD). The DDGSPO is an integrated workforce consisting of ADF, APS and industry personnel based at Garden Island in Sydney.
