If you are looking for a challenging career that makes a difference, perhaps a role in the Department of Defence working on Australia’s most complex Defence naval capabilities is the opportunity you’ve been waiting for?

The Australian Government is laying the foundations for a nationwide naval shipbuilding enterprise to support the implementation of the Naval Shipbuilding Plan. The Plan outlines the Australian Government’s vision for the Australian Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise and the significant investment required in coming decades. Modernisation of our naval forces is a complex, national endeavour aimed at building and sustaining Australia’s naval capabilities. It will create economic growth through Australian industry involvement and in securing Australian jobs for future generations.

Submarines are a unique Defence capability and play an essential role in supporting Australia’s maritime security, and your work within the program by engaging with Navy and industry suppliers, will ensure that Navy has an enduring and potent submarine capability for generations to come.

What we are looking for:

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Collins Sonar Capability Program you will perform an important role in upgrading the sonar systems and interfacing with the submarine. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with sufficient relevant experience in a similar role. You will work in a dynamic and diverse environment requiring a number of key skills to undertake the following tasks:

  • Engineering life cycle tasks of reviewing engineering deliverables & documentation, tracking and participating in Verification & Validation activities, and guiding design decisions for Sonar systems.
  • Work closely with Systems Integrator and sub-contractors, Platform System Integrator, In-service Support contractors and other Australian Department of Defence stakeholders.
  • Provide technical input on mechanical systems within a marine environment.
  • Participate in and guide Human Factor Engineering workshops for sonar work consoles and equipment.
  • Participate in risk management activities that include identification and classification of engineering and other areas of expertise.
  • Evaluate technical deliverables to ensure alignment with project objectives.

In addition to being involved in building Australia’s future naval fleet, you will also have access to generous and attractive working conditions as an Australian Public Servant in Defence.

Working for Defence:

Defence will support you in balancing work life with family and other priorities. You can access a variety of flexible working arrangements, including part-time work, occasionally working from home and working hours that aren’t always nine to five. There are also competitive remuneration packages that may respond to industry variations and include generous superannuation arrangements.

Defence will make a superannuation contribution of 15.4 per cent, higher than most industries, with the opportunity for you to make additional personal contributions. Defence is an inclusive employer and values the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the Department. You will be eligible to access a range of work-life balance and career benefits including:

  • Free access to gymnasium facilities in many of our locations
  • Quality training, mentoring and support to grow your career
  • The opportunity to work with sophisticated and leading-edge technologies
  • Four weeks annual leave, with the option to purchase an additional four weeks leave
  • Three weeks personal/carers leave if you are unwell or need to care for others in your family/household
  • Three months long service leave after meeting the qualifying period
  • 14 weeks maternity, adoption or fostering leave
  • Additional leave days, including a stand down over the Christmas and New Year period and other public holidays
  • Other leave to support compassionate, bereavement or unexpected circumstances.
