The High Frequency Radar (HFR) Branch, of the Intelligence, Surveillance and Space Division, DST, is looking for an enthusiastic engineer to become a Radar Specialist. HFR Branch is the research and development authority for Defence’s HF Over the Horizon Radar program. The Branch is an acknowledged world leader in HF radar and conducts a wide range of R&D activities to support the enhancement of the Jindalee Operation Radar Network (JORN) and associated Defence capabilities, improving operational systems and promoting new capabilities for the ADF.

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplined team of experienced engineers, scientists and technicians developing and demonstrating next generation HF radar technology, components, systems, concepts and capabilities.  You will have the opportunity to think critically and work in collaboration with Defence personnel, academia and industry.  DST encourages continuing education and training, and you will have access to world class radar research facilities and a variety of work to assist you in your career development. 

Position Duties

Under guidance of staff, the Radar Specialist will:

  1. As part of a team, develop hardware and systems of hardware to test new concepts and further develop current capability;
  2. Implement radar and signal processing algorithms to be tested on fielded hardware;
  3. Participate in sophisticated field trials to test the ideas developed;
  4. Process, analyse and report on data gathered during experimental campaigns; and
  5. Work in a collaborative team environment.
