The School of Civil & Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and IT at UTS is committed to building a national centre of excellence and advanced research on transport infrastructure, and is recruiting a distinguished researcher with a demonstrably peerless track record as an academic and industry leader to take up the Director, Transport Research Centre position. The position will be based at the centrally located UTS Campus in Ultimo and will report directly to the Head of School, Distinguished Professor Daichao Sheng.
The UTS Transport Research Centre comprises researchers from multiple disciplines across UTS. It is the Faculty’s vision to significantly expand its capabilities in transportation geotechnics and transport planning areas. The Centre will conduct pioneering research on heavy-haul and high-speed rail, highways, ports, airports, and low-land floodplain transport infrastructure, as well as on big data analysis and artificial intelligence-based modelling for reducing maintenance costs of transport infrastructure, among other areas of interest, with a view to developing innovative, cost-effective, smart and resilient transport solutions across Australia. Research outcomes will guide and advance current practice in industry and produce vital benefits to the economy, local communities and sustainable futures.
About the Role
As the Director, you will be driving the national and international profile of the University in transport infrastructure research. You will be accountable for the development and implementation of the Centre’s strategic directions and to its overall leadership and management. Key responsibilities of the role include engaging with industry stakeholders and securing competitive government research grants and industry funding. You will also be responsible for developing and directing projects, and strongly engaged in providing leadership and guidance to Centre research staff, research students and more broadly across the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
As part of the package, there will be an opportunity to make recommendations for additional immediate key appointments to the research team, subject to UTS approval. The Director will report to the Head of School.
- An extensive and outstanding track record of conducting research funded by government bodies, including the Australian Research Council (ARC) and The Cooperative Research Centres (CRC).
- A distinguished national and international research profile in transportation geotechnics with a record of the highest quality research leadership.
- Demonstrated success in leveraging national and international networks to build and enhance the reputation of the University.
- An outstanding track record of sustained industry engagement in conducting research with a focus on advancing transportation geotechnics.
- Evidence of clear strategic thinking, with the ability to adapt through a future-oriented focus in a way that provides real impact to the discipline/university.
- Demonstrated ability to build cohesive teams around mutually understood strategic objectives, which are aligned to the outcomes of the university.
- A strong record as an evidence-based leader who embraces a continuous improvement framework.
Base Salary: $191,340 pa base package (Level E) with relevant additional allowances added.
This role attracts 17% superannuation (pension) in addition to base salary.

The position is full-time and the appointment will be made on a continuing basis.
