Imagine a career equipping and sustaining the Australian Defence Force

About the Defence TAFE Employment Scheme
The Defence TAFE Employment Scheme (DTES) supports students through their final year/s of study, by providing paid employment combined with ongoing study. TAFE trainees are provided the opportunity to use the skills and knowledge acquired at TAFE through hands-on and exciting employment in a unique environment.

The DTES is a civilian Australian Public Service (APS) employment opportunity. Participants are not part of the military and will not be required to participate in military exercises or to wear a uniform. They will, however, work alongside members of the Australian Defence Force as part of their employment.

Participants are employed as full-time trainees (Trainee APS Technical starting salary of $48,162 pa, plus 15.4% super). The TAFE scheme consists of on the job work experience (part-time) and continuation of TAFE studies (part-time).

On successful completion of the program, TAFE students are advanced in classification to an APS Level 3-4 (Technical) if engaged as a technical employee, or an APS Level 3 classification if engaged as a logistics employee.

The DTES offers:

  • paid employment to complete your TAFE study;
  • flexible working hours incorporating a balance of study;
  • hands on work and the opportunity to get involved with exciting leading edge projects supporting the ADF;
  • guaranteed ongoing employment in a dynamic organisation that complements your study; and
