The Opportunity

  • Are you an engineer with a diverse skill set?
  • Do you have a record of solving complex technical problems independently?
  • Enable and support world-class scientific blue-water research on the RV Investigator

As the Software Engineer / Instrumentation Engineer with CSIRO’s National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI) business unit, your primary focus will be on software engineering.  For success in the role though, you will also draw on your mechanical aptitude and knowledge, and your strong interest in electronics and/or instrumentation.  As a member of the Instruments and Electronics Group within the Engineering and Technology Program (E&T), you will provide support to the research vessel in the areas of software development and management, instrumentation integration and repair and scientific equipment advice, operation and maintenance.

The research vessel has a broad range of vessel based scientific instrumentation and advanced deployable equipment used to enable the research of the Australian and International science community. A requirement of the role is to provide up to 85 days per year of seagoing support on voyages that are typically 3 to 8 weeks in duration.

Liaising closely with scientists whilst at sea, you will develop and maintain onboard software, operate and deploy scientific systems, perform electronic fault-finding and repairs, operate and maintain ship-based instrumentation, and provide technical support.  Based in the CSIRO Marine Laboratories in Hobart, your onshore role includes development of software to control and operate scientific equipment and systems, maintenance of existing software, repairs and maintenance of instrumentation systems, and the provision of technical advice to stakeholders.

On-the-job training and mentoring will be provided in CSIRO-specific systems and for the seagoing aspect of the role.

In this role you will:

  • Participate in research voyages on the RV Investigator and contribute to the achievement of research objectives by operating scientific equipment, performing maintenance and repair of instrumentation, and reporting on equipment performance and status.
  • Develop and maintain software systems in support of the operation and deployment of scientific equipment and systems.
  • Proactively identify and take ownership of opportunities for improvements in systems and procedures.
  • Contribute to the smooth and orderly running of electronics and instrumentation support on the vessel.
  • Liaise with clients to determine their needs and ensure satisfaction.
  • As required, proactively manage non-routine tasks which will contribute to research voyage objectives.

    • The ability to develop software in modern languages (e.g. Python) and experience with relevant frameworks, libraries and languages.
    • An understanding of software engineering methodologies and version control systems.
  • The ability to fault-find and problem-solve routine or unusual faults in scientific instrumentation, electronic systems, computers, and network systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to undertake assembly, repairs and maintenance using hand tools and/or machinery.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure, manage competing priorities and show versatility in ambiguous, non-routine and/or urgent situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
  • The ability to proactively identify system problems, develop solutions and manage implementation.
