The Opportunity

CSIRO and AquaWatch Mission partners are seeking Software Engineers to join the AquaWatch technical implementation team, that will design and build a cloud-based, multi-sensor data integration and visualisation system to support the AquaWatch Mission. The AquaWatch Data Analysis platform would leverage the CSIRO Earth Analytics Science Innovation (EASI) platform which uses Kubernetes, AWS Cloud, and advanced Python libraries like the Open Data Cube and Dask to perform combined global satellite Earth observation and on-ground instrument data analysis, machine learning and modeling.

The successful candidate will work in an agile cross functional team and be required to work very closely with scientists, solutions architects, and security to contribute to and validate designs. The position will provide the opportunity for continual learning and to work with a highly skilled and diverse team.  The role will play a key part in delivering the next generation of our the AquaWatch Analytics capability to partners and end-users.

Your duties will include:

  • Work collaboratively with the ADIAS Program team in CSIRO and AquaWatch partners to continuously improve the end-user experience, stability and security of the system.  
  • Technically contribute to the design and implementation of applications and highly scalable scientific algorithms in Earth Analytics using Python.
  • Develop scalable data processing pipelines and robust scientific workflows at continental scale in a Cloud native environment using Kubernetes and AWS.
  • Contribute positively to stimulate and promote a team approach; develop sound working and knowledge sharing relationships within the team and all technical teams across the business.
  • Build and foster a professional and friendly relationship with business owners, stakeholders and end users.
  • Coordinate and produce relevant systems documentation.
  • Keep management and other team members informed of progress and issues via the Azure DevOps environment and other software engineering and communications tools (GIT, MS Teams).

Location: Canberra, Adelaide, or Sydney (Marsfield) preferred. Other locations considered where CSIRO has a significant presence.
Salary: AU$121,455 - AU$142,321 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

  • A tertiary qualification in computer science, software engineering or vendor certification in a relevant technical subject such as solution architect and software developer
  • Strong programming skills in Python and related libraries
  • Strong experience in automation and implementing CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Deployment).
  • Strong experience in C/C++, JAVA or similar programming languages. 

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of development of scalable Cloud solutions. 
  • Implementing pipelines using Azure Devops and/or GitHub
  • Knowledge and understanding of working with research and engineering to provide solutions and software development support.
  • Background, or working knowledge, in Earth Analytics or Machine Learning
  • Demonstrated experience with AWS Cloud and Kubernetes
  • Background, or working knowledge, in Earth Analytics or Machine Learning
  • Demonstrated experience with Python scientific software libraries including Dask, SciPy, xarray, holoviz, Open Data Cube and Panel.
  • Code optimisation and Object-Orientated / Scripting
