The Opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is coordinating a global effort to build the largest science facility on the planet. This next-generation radio-astronomy observatory will transform our understanding of the Universe and deliver benefits to society through global collaboration and innovation.
 
SKAO is one observatory with two telescopes: SKA-Low in Western Australia and SKA-Mid in South Africa, with the global headquarters at Jodrell Bank, UK. The SKAO is an intergovernmental organisation composed of member states from four continents, with organisations from 16 countries in total currently participating in the project.

In your role as the Environmental Advisor, you will implement environmental programs to ensure SKAO complies with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, and contractual obligations. In your role, you will also lead and assist in the development of environmental initiatives in line with SKAO’s HSE strategy and with the requirements of international standard ISO 14001. This is an independent role and will lead the provision of specialist environmental technical direction, providing advice, support, and assistance on environmental matters across the project. 

Your duties will include:

• Lead the delivery of environmentally responsible solutions and outcomes in accordance with SKAO and CSIRO HSE Policy, the Site Licence from CSIRO, the HSE management system with applicable laws and obligations under Commonwealth and State legislations, including the obligations for land management and heritage protection under the ILUA.
• Provide practical environmental support to HSE and operational staff to address issues and concerns in terms of environmental management. 
• Work independently to deliver results through the use and allocation of available resources within constraints laid down by managers. 
• Influence the decisions of managers by recognising the need for change and initiating innovative solutions/proposals. 
• Represent SKA?Low at external and internal forums related to work function. 
• Coach and educate staff through knowledge sharing across relevant organisational teams, utilising best practice and communities of practice to minimise the environmental impact. 

Location: Geraldton, Western Australia
Salary: AU$102k – AU$111k pa (pro?rata for part?time) + up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Full?time, job?share or part?time – minimum 60 hours per fortnight, Specified term of 5 years (with the potential opportunity to extend)

To be considered you will need:

Essential:

• Relevant tertiary qualifications (Environmental Sciences or Environmental Engineering) with a minimum bachelor’s degree level, and demonstrated experience in environmental management. 
• Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of HSE legislation, codes of practice and standards as they apply to environmental management. 
• Demonstrated experience initiating and implementing sound environmental management practices in collaboration with key stakeholders. 
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and build strong relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. 
• Sound judgement and initiative, with a proven ability to proactively identify and resolve complex problems and issues. 

Desirable:

• Experience in the construction of scientific research facilities.  
• Experience working in remote locations.  
• Experience with indigenous heritage and related environmental issues.
• Experience interacting with a broad community of users especially indigenous groups.

Eligibility
