The Opportunity

CSIRO’s Hydrogen Industry Mission is a rare opportunity to help build Australia’s clean hydrogen industry by scaling demand and driving down hydrogen cost.

We need early to mid-career researchers in science and engineering to solve impossible problems to deliver a secure and resilient energy system and support our transition to a low emissions future.

It is estimated that a clean hydrogen industry will create more than 16,000 jobs, generate $50 billion a year in GDP, and result in avoided greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to a third of Australia’s current fossil fuel emissions by 2050. The National Hydrogen Strategy was adopted by all federal, state and territory governments in 2019.

It sets the vision for a clean, innovative, safe and competitive hydrogen industry that helps our nation transition to a sustainable and affordable low emissions future. The CSIRO Hydrogen Industry Mission was formally launched in May 2021 and focuses on leveraging CSIRO's hydrogen research capabilities in partnership with government, industry and the research community.

We are working to:

  • Promote major new domestic and export industries, creating urban and regional jobs and GPD growth.
  • Help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in industrial processes.
  • Contribute to a diversified energy system with increased energy security and resilience.
