CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this position you will develop new capability in the automated synthesis and characterisation of porous materials for energy applications and beyond.  The project will focus on developing automated methods of material synthesis and the development of novel characterization methods to rapidly evaluate the materials.  The Fellow will have access to CSIRO’s automated chemistry platforms and will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team comprised of chemists, engineers, and experts in characterisation. Opportunities for collaboration with our national and international partners are expected.

Your duties will include:

  • Explore the range of experimental variables and evaluate the current state of the art in the chemistry of porous materials.
  • Develop and optimize protocols/methods for the automated synthesis of materials using robotic platforms and associated facilities.
  • Develop protocols for characterisation of materials using existing facilities, and link these to synthesis efforts where possible.
  • Investigate, propose, and design new (proxy) characterization methods for the evaluation and of materials synthesized.
  • Lead efforts to construct new apparatus for the automated evaluation of materials. 
  • Identify and implement opportunities to employ machine learning into processes across the entire workflow.

Salary:  AU$89k - AU$98k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) OR hold an engineering degree plus a Master of Science (MSc) or Master of Engineering (MEng) qualifications (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a masters) plus equivalent levels of original and significant contributions to research and development to that expected of someone of a new PhD graduate. The doctorate or masters must be in a relevant discipline area, such as Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Automation/Robotics Engineering.  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (full-time equivalent) of relevant research experience.
  • Experience with automation in a laboratory or scientific facility setting.
  • Experience in wet chemistry laboratory (from university or workplace).
  • Experience with design and fabrication of novel processes or apparatus.
  • Experience with the management and delivery of engineering projects..
  • A record of science innovation and creativity, including the ability & willingness to incorporate novel ideas and approaches into scientific investigations.
