The Opportunity

  • Be part of industry-revolutionising projects in quantum technology!
  • Great long-term opportunity to collaborate with Australia’s leading scientists
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s Premier Science Agency – and grow your research career

CSIRO’s Manufacturing Business Unit combines multi-disciplinary scientific and engineering capability and uses world-class infrastructure to partner with industry in the development of innovative products and processes that allow Australian manufacturers to be globally competitive and environmentally sustainable.

CSIRO’s Applied Physics Group is a diverse team of scientists, engineers and research staff that develop devices and engineered systems for the benefit of industrial partners in aerospace, space, defence, renewable energy, telecommunications, minerals and mining, and transportation. Quantum devices, in particular, is an area for significant expansion and we are seeking to fill a number of exciting new roles across the group.

The Quantum Device Fabrication Scientist will join our ‘Quantum Devices & Manufacturing’ team, that uses CSIRO’s world-leading scientific capability in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) electronic devices, circuits, and sensors to develop advanced magnetometry. In this role, you will be designing and fabricating multilayer devices, and using your existing knowledge and expertise in thin film material properties to optimise device performance. You will be involved in the collation, analysis, and interpretation of experimental data, and collaborating with a team of Australia’s leading quantum research scientists to create industry-changing new developments.

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carrying out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity, and innovation.
  • Designing and fabricating multilayer devices (e.g., epitaxial thin films), as well as using your knowledge in thin film material properties including optical, electrical, and mechanical to optimise device performance.
  • Undertaking electrical and magnetic characterisation cryogenic measurements of experimental devices.
  • Collating, analysing, and interpreting measurements using statistical analysis.
  • Incorporating novel approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing, and further research.
  • Problem solving using the most profitable and practical methods, preparing detailed design proposals and experimental protocols.
  • Presenting results in a meaningful format, preparing reports for clients and/or writing scientific papers for publication.

Location: Lindfield (Sydney), NSW

Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years
Reference: 80442

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as physics or engineering.
  • Experience in device nanofabrication, and a comprehensive knowledge of materials science and device physics.
  • Experience in undertaking laboratory measurements using electrical characterisation equipment.
  • Ability in planning, organising, and manipulating experimental data including statistical and fitting techniques.
  • Ability to undertake original, creative, and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
