This position represents an exciting opportunity for an experienced chemical engineer to join the multi-discipline Environment and Sustainability team in CSIRO Mineral Resources.  The team is focused on studying emerging science and developing cutting-edge technologies to address environmental issues in the mining/resources industry and support the industry transformation towards sustainable future.

In this role you will conduct innovative research and development in monitoring and control of mine dust and emerging industry decarbonisation technologies. You will have the opportunity to build and maintain networks, play a lead role in securing project funds, provide scientific leadership and pursue new ideas and approaches that create new concepts.

More specifically you will:

  • Develop methodology and protocol for dust monitoring including total dust, inhalable dust, respirable dust.
  • Develop novel functional materials including filter membranes and additives for dust sampling and control.
  • Study the fundamental interfacial chemistry for dust suppression particularly for metalliferous dust.
  • Develop photothermal integrated processes for emissions reduction, mineral processing, waste treatment.
  • Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for client satisfaction.
  • Plan and prepare research proposals and carry out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation.

Location: Pullenvale, Brisbane, QLD
Salary:  AU$98k - AU$106k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD in Chemical Engineering or a qualification and research experience which, when taken together, are equivalent to this educational standard.
  • Demonstrated expertise in functional nanomaterials development, materials characterisation, and chemical reaction and kinetics.
  • Demonstrated technical skills in developing laboratory scale rigs and small pilot-scale test units.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse problems and develop appropriate and practical solutions.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and effectively, and to work cooperatively with others in a team environment, and to liaise at all levels from management through to technical staff.
  • Knowledge and expertise in catalysis or electrochemistry would be an advantage, however is not an essential requirement.
