CSIRO Postdoctoral Fellowship in Machine Learning, Materials Science and Robotics

The Opportunity

  • Use your programming skills to find new ways to digitise materials science research!
  • Do you want to develop machine learning techniques that optimise polymer design/synthesis processes?
  • Join CSIRO and kick start your research career!

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years’ relevant postdoctoral work experience.  These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.

In this Postdoctoral Fellowship, you will help to discover new ways to digitise the materials research laboratory and overcome inefficiencies that hinder the high throughput materials research community. Through the development of machine learning (ML) algorithms using new and existing polymer design experiments, you will provide input to robotic synthesis platforms to optimise the use of ML in polymer design and synthesis processes.

Your duties will include

  • Developing and implementing machine learning algorithms using design of experiments and experimentally determined data sets.
  • Integrating new hardware for in-line and automated characterisation and analysis with robotic synthesis platforms. For example, gel permeation chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance.
  • Developing standardised protocols for automated synthesis that can be applied to a range of chemical systems.
  • Undertaking experimental work on the design and synthesis of antimicrobial polymers in a robotic platform.
  • Screening synthesised polymer libraries produced and undertaking structure-property studies on the application of these biopolymers for antibacterial efficacy in vitro.

Location: Melbourne (Clayton) Victoria, Australia
Salary: AU$83k - AU$94k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be successful you will need

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering/Science, or other demonstrably relevant discipline.
    •  Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years (or part-time equivalent) of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with machine learning techniques as they apply to materials science/materials informatics.
  • Familiarity and skills in the use of programming tools and languages such as Python™, C++, MATLAB and LabView.
  • High-level communication skills including the ability to present research outcomes at national and international conferences.
  • A sound publication record in peer-reviewed journals and/or authorship of scientific papers or reports.
