The Position:  

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

CSIRO Health & Biosecurity are seeking a motivated postdoctoral fellow will join a collaborative project between the CSIRO, Mental Health program at QIMR Berghofer, UQ, and RBWH. This study focuses on the very early stage of dementia and is Australia's first younger healthy cohort selected for high risk of dementia. PISA is a multidisciplinary platform that combines cutting-edge bioinformatics, brain imaging and lifestyle monitoring to understand the mechanisms of this devastating disease. As one of the five study cores of PISA, the current project employs smart sensing technology to achieve lifestyle monitoring in everyday life.

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO, under the direction of senior research scientists, that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
  • Designing and developing novel algorithms for pattern recognition, and examining the relationship between lifestyle factors and risks for dementia.
  • Developing hardware/software prototypes for data acquisition, and cloud solutions for data storage and sharing.
  • Undertaking regular reviews of relevant literature and patents.
  • Producing high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, for client reports and granting of patents.                                                             

Location:  Herston, QLD

Salary:      AU $82K to AU $93K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will have:

  • A doctorate (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a PhD) in a relevant discipline area, such as Computer Science, Electrical/Biomedical Engineering. Please note: To be eligible for this role you must have no more than 3 years of relevant postdoctoral experience.
  • High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Machine Learning/Data Mining, Signal Processing, and Pattern Recognition.
  • Demonstrated experience of mathematical/analytical approach to address real world questions, and ability to design efficient algorithms to explore big data.
