The Position

CSIRO's Health and Biosecurity business unit is seeking an experienced Business Development Manager to build and monitor a portfolio of external relationships and pipeline of funding opportunities aligned to the science and impact goals within the Risk Evaluation and Preparedness (REP) Research Program. The REP Program has a diverse portfolio of innovative, multidisciplinary projects to mitigate pest threats and emerging disease threats to people, livestock, agriculture and wildlife. The Research Program is broad and includes prioritisation and surveillance of systems in the early detection of and response to incursions.  This is a highly collaborative program that works across other Business Units within CSIRO.

As Business Development (BD) Manager on our team, you will explore opportunities for growth in emerging infectious diseases, animal platforms, vector control and commercialisation of current platforms.  You will work closely with the existing BD team members, commercialisation and marketing to jointly engage with clients and internal stakeholders to identify strategic BD opportunities and assist in closing complex deals.  You will also have significant input into the growth and development of the CSIRO BD strategy and plans for the REP Program.

Your duties will include: 

  • Developing, managing and maintaining a portfolio of commercial relationships aligned to Health and Biosecurity’s strategy and plans with multiple touch points within the client organisation.
  • Maintaining opportunity pipeline and workflow systems to ensure accurate forecasting and visibility of opportunities across the Business Unit.
  • Working closely with researchers to plan, develop and deliver research proposals.
  • Developing and applying a strong knowledge of CSIRO Health & Biosecurity strategies, policies, processes, systems and tools relevant to BD, including operational planning, commercial governance mechanisms and pipeline management, particularly with relevance to commercial activities (e.g. TPA, Copyright, Trademarks, Patents, CAC Acts).
  • Proactively creating a portfolio of ‘trusted advisor’ relationships with strategic clients, partners, and key internal stakeholders to drive BD activities and achieve objectives.
  • Developing and applying a broad knowledge of the Health & Biosecurity science domains and having strong working knowledge of specific science areas of responsibility incorporating commercial BD principles, negotiation, markets, business and technology trends and relevant issues.

Location: Negotiable - Brisbane, QLD; Canberra, ACT; or Melbourne, VIC
Salary:  AU$109K to AU$128K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful, you will need:

  • A degree in science, engineering, business or marketing and at least 3 years’ experience in a business development or commercial role.
  • Experience working with researchers in public research organisations or private industry.
  • The ability to partner effectively with client groups to achieve and grow business development and/or commercial impact aligned to the Business Unit’s strategy.
  • To be a self-starter and a team player with experience in building and developing key internal and external relationships across a range of disciplines including science and the broader BD&C team.
  • An understanding of commercial BD principles, licensing, negotiation, markets, business and technology trends and issues relevant to the Health and Biosecurity Business Unit.
  • The ability to lead and manage client relationships within complex environments.
  • To drive and close commercial opportunities.
  • To maintain opportunity pipeline and workflow systems to ensure accurate forecasting and visibility of opportunities across the Business Unit.
  • Knowledge and proven experience in licencing and commercialisation of infectious disease innovation solutions in vaccines, point of care and associated healthcare sectors.
