The Position

The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) is world-leading eResearch infrastructure which is in partnership with CSIRO (host agency), Australian Museums and Herbaria and other biological collections to develop and maintain a platform to aggregate and deliver Australia’s biodiversity data holdings. The ALA is a team of approximately 32 staff and is primarily funded through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), administered by the Department of Education and Training.
The Atlas of Living Australia (ALA), hosted by CSIRO, is seeking an experienced Developer Operations Engineer Manager to actively maintain and support the ALA’s IT infrastructure, manage an operational budget and lead an operations support team.

The successful candidate will use his/her skills and technical knowledge to support and maintain a multi-cloud, complex environment that meets ALA project objectives. In addition you will be responsible for an operational budget and quality assurance and testing processes across ALA systems.

Specifically you will:

  • Liaise with ALA stakeholder community to understand user needs and requirements in developing tools and software solutions.
  • Manage end to end solution development involving other team members, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop information management frameworks that underpin solution development.
  • Contribute to the development of various learning material including wiki’s, video and eLearning in support of enterprise collaboration platforms and solutions.
  • Prepare necessary reports to keep product development and achievements visible.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of service delivery.

Location:  Black Mountain, ACT or Melbourne, VIC preferred

Salary:  AU $109K - $128K plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in managing public facing web-based bespoke software environments and associated systems in multi-tenanted cloud environments including, AWS, IM&T, Nectar Research Cloud (OpenStack) and NCI;
  • Well-developed analytical skills with the ability to actively review and improve a complex, open source, IT environment including four or more of: Linux, OpenStack, Ansible, Tomcat, Apache, Nginx as well as relational databases (MySQL, PostGIS) and noSQL databases (Cassandra, MongoDB).
  • Experience writing scripts in one or more languages such as bash, python, groovy.
  • Experience with version control tools, such as Git and SVN.
  • Excellent communication skills with experience engaging a range of technical and business stakeholders when analysing and resolving system issues
  • Demonstrated understanding of quality assurance processes and testing systems;
  • Experience in management of operational budgets including forecasting and monitoring;
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and across teams with other IT professionals, stakeholders and the research science community and manage a team.
