About the role and you:
Our national Sustainability and Resilience team, based in Melbourne, is currently seeking an experienced Principal level Economist with transport industry knowledge to join our innovative and forward-thinking team.  In this role you will lead, create and contribute to research projects on transport economics analysis and modelling.  You will take responsibility for project management, including quality management, client satisfaction and profitability.
 
You will apply your transport economics skills to the evaluation of maintenance and investment in road infrastructure, do benefit cost analyses involving road user cost models, road works delay costs, crash cost models and GHG emission costs.  Your experience in statistical analysis and econometric modelling will be highly desirable.  It is important that you have experience in working with engineering professionals.
 
You will use your technical knowledge to manage and creatively apply solutions to complex issues where guidelines or precedents are not readily available.  You will challenge the status quo and if there is no answer, you have the ability and freedom to provide applicable guidelines, whilst inspiring others to perform and think at their best.
  
In this position you will:
  • Play a key role in initiating, creating and directing high level research activities which would result in major scientific or commercial outcomes
  • Have a key role in wining work, pitching ideas, developing proposals and creating opportunities
  • Lead, manage and contribute to research, consultancy and development projects
  • Exercise independent judgement in work scheduling matters, where resources, objectives and methods are only partially defined
  • Collaborate effectively with teams nationally and provide technical leadership and expert advice 
We seek an individual who has:
  • Tertiary qualifications, degree or post graduate in economics/ econometrics or engineering
  • Equivalent research and/or consulting experience, preferably in the transport industry is preferred
  • Significant 8+ years relevant work experience
  • Preferred experience in the delivery of economic analysis, evaluation including benefit cost analysis (BCA), multi-criteria analysis (MCA) and/or development of traffic/transport forecasting and economic evaluation models
  • Highly developed analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to simplify communication for complex problems
  • Highly developed report writing, presentations and communication skills
  • Exceptional team working skills and an ability to perform duties under limited direction and supervision
