  • Up to 6 Roles Full-time Fixed term for 12 months (renewable), Base Salary: $92,053 p.a. - $100,287 p.a. Level 7, plus a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation.  

About the opportunity 

This position will provide senior software engineering skills for Research and Development projects in Field Robotics. In collaboration with the Lead Technical Engineer the Senior Software Engineer will be expected to research, design, develop, build, test software and field a range of exciting machine learning and optimisation techniques and information systems in the mining domain.

There are up to seven Software Engineering roles available, some with a research support and prototyping focus and others with a devops focus. In these roles you will:

  • develop python and  C++ software for information fusion and modelling
  • work as part of a larger distributed team
  • work using an agile methodology

Within the research support and prototyping roles, you will work with researchers to develop, test and validate solutions to real-world problems using machine learning and optimisation techniques.

Within the devops roles you will work closely with industry partners to prepare and adapt prototypes for integration into their production Mine Automation System.  This will involve selecting, designing and implementing a variety of technologies including distributed computing, machine learning and optimisation suites.

  • exceptional skills in Python and/or C++ software development with at least 3 years' experience
  • proven full stack development experience
  • working knowledge of the Linux development environment
  • thorough understanding of object oriented design
  • ability to dissect problems and provide innovative solutions.
  • excellent communication skills

The Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation (RTCMA) is a joint partnership between The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at the University of Sydney and, Rio Tinto, in operation since 2007. The aim of the Centre is to develop and implement the vision of a fully autonomous, remotely operated mine.

With major funding support from Rio Tinto, the RTCMA has built up a successful technical and research program, ranging from the construction and fielding of large-scale robotic platforms and information systems through to quality journal papers. Currently the Centre is staffed by around 25 world-class researchers, technical staff, and postgraduate students from locations spanning six continents.
