About the opportunity

The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at the University of Sydney, in partnership with Rio Tinto, a global mining company, established the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation (RTCMA) in 2007, and is extending this Centre for a further 5 years through to 2023. The aim of the RTCMA is to develop and implement the vision of a fully autonomous, remotely operated mine.

This is a major research and development initiative with a clear focus on delivering world leadership in mining automation. The new Centre is seeking a candidate for the position of Centre Lead. The Centre Lead will lead a team of approximately 30 researchers and technical staff and offer further opportunities to grow the Centre. You will have an executive function to support the development of, and implement, the R&D strategy, and will manage the day-to-day operational activities of the team. Leadership and team management skills, together with the capacity to communicate strategy and technical direction, will be essential.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • a PhD in an engineering discipline related to automation, or a mining discipline related to mine system operations
  • substantial experience in delivering or engaging with University research and its translation
  • a demonstrated record of providing leadership and fostering excellence in research and industry engagement and will have attained recognition as a leading authority in their discipline.
  • a sound understanding of both theoretical and applied research, and demonstrable experience managing significant R&D projects with successful delivery to end-users
  • made innovative and distinguished contributions to R&D in mine automation, and make a commensurate contribution to the work of the University

A demonstrated ability to work closely with industry or university in applying research outcomes will be crucial. The appointee will also be expected to engage in the training of postgraduates and industry staff, and apply practical skills and solve problems while in the field.

The position is full-time, fixed term for three years, with potential for extension subject to funding and subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies consists of an Academic Services Directorate comprising of Education support and Research support. The Faculty has 5 Schools (Civil Engineering, Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering, Electrical and Information Engineering, Information Technologies and Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering) undertaking world standard research and offering bachelors programs and coursework and research postgraduate degrees.
