About the opportunity 

The Commercialisation Theme Leader (CTL) is responsible for identifying university research, technology and expertise suitable for commercial development as well as promoting and facilitating linkages between researchers and industry and optimising translation and commercialisation of the university’s research, technology and expertise.

  • demonstrated experience in successfully commercialising IP
  • demonstrated experience in reviewing, developing commercial agreements
  • highly developed communication and relationship management skills
  • demonstrated experience in market validation and proof of concept development of IP
  • demonstrated experience in intellectual property protection and management
  • demonstrated experience in fostering an entrepreneurial culture
  • appropriate tertiary qualification in Engineering/IT and/or extensive equivalent relevant experience

The DVC Research Portfolio currently includes six groups that support the DVCR and researchers to achieve the University’s research goals:

1. Research Strategy & Policy Framework coordinates policy advice and projects;

2. Research Development & Collaboration provides strategic advice to academic units on research development strategies, including systems to develop research capability, and provide technical support to researchers applying for funding so as to optimise successful outcomes;

3. Commercial Development & Industry Partnerships develops and manages industry interactions, and supports processes for disseminating and transferring knowledge from University research, including developing and managing Intellectual Property and commercialisation;

4. Research Grants & Contracts develops and manages systems for efficient management of research funding applications and post-award requirements so as to optimise successful outcomes;

5. Research Integrity & Ethics Administration develops and manages processes to ensure compliance with standards and with codes of conduct relevant to research and for ethics standards with codes of conduct relevant to research and for ethics approvals (human and animal), and Laboratory Animal Services;

6. Research Reporting, Analysis, Data & Systems develops and manages data capture and analysis, and coordinates development of IT systems to support business requirements.

The DVC Research Portfolio also includes the Core Research Facilities providing a core set of state-of-the-art microscopy and microanalysis services to researchers. The DVCR provides oversight for the governance and operations of the Charles Perkins Centre and The Brain and Mind Research Centre (BMC).

As the University of Sydney’s primary face to industry, CDIP is the University’s port of first call for strategic industry engagement and provision of innovation and technology transfer services by identifying, protecting, translating and supporting the exchange of knowledge and expertise generated at the University.

CDIP works in close collaboration with the other DVCR teams, in particular with the Research Development & Collaboration and the Research Grants & Contracts teams to maximize efficiency and ensuring that sought outcomes are effectively identified and delivered.
