About the opportunity 

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Operations you will provide sound advice, consultation, development and maintenance for diverse, specialized, scientific instrumentation and support specialist applications to best meet the requirements of research projects and teaching programs in the School of Chemistry.  In this role you will utilise your expertise in advanced scientific instrumentation along with an understanding of customised integration of software with hardware to provide critical instrument and computer support that is out of scope of ICT support.

You will also provide complementary research and teaching services though systems analysis, fault diagnosis and repair of a broad range of specialised scientific instrumentation.

In this position, you will:

  • assist with scientific equipment fault diagnosis and repair
  • provide specialist cryogens handling and management
  • provide advice and support for custom-built computer/instrumentation integrations.

To be considered, you will possess:

  • degree in science or electronic engineering, or equivalent
  • strong knowledge of advanced scientific analytical techniques and instrumentation
  • demonstrated ability to perform fault diagnosis and repair of specialised electronic and electro-mechanical equipment
  • proven experience in modern electronic componentry, including analogue and digital electronics
  • experience in the maintenance and technical support of a broad range of specialised scientific instrumentation, including, but not limited to, NMR spectrometers, mass spectrometers, chromatographic instruments and oscilloscopes
  • broad knowledge of a range of computer hardware and software platforms and operating systems
  • demonstrated initiative and where appropriate use an innovative approach to improve performance
  • ability to manage priorities, and balance a diverse workload
  • demonstrated ability to effectively understand and communicate with a wide variety of people including staff and students
