The Sydney Health Data Coalition (SHDC) is a new multi-disciplinary initiative of the University of Sydney based primarily in the Westmead precinct. SHDC aims to develop and apply data science and machine technologies across all fields of clinical medicine and health. SHDC is a key part of the University’s Sydney Informatics Hub and translational data science initiative. The Sydney Informatics Hub comprises a team of software and data science research engineers tasked with the challenge of translating the best data science into tools, platforms and systems to assist in research and outcomes across all fields of academic endeavour. 

SHDC and Sydney Informatics Hub are seeking to recruit up to 2 Research Engineers to support translational data science in medicine and health. SHDC Research Engineers are exciting roles to support cutting edge research and development in a critical and transformational field. The SHDC Research Engineer role will need to have experience in the use of complex data, and a willingness to learn and develop modern data science methods. These roles will develop and implement data science algorithms, software tools and data systems to support research opportunities across all areas of clinical medicine and health. These roles will be based in the Westmead precinct. These roles will report to the Lead Engineer of the Sydney Informatics Hub.

You will need to demonstrate:

• tertiary education in a computational area of study (health, bioinformatics, computer science, computational statistics engineering, physics, biology, for example)
• an understanding of modern data software and tools, from cloud computing to the many existing commercial products used for data analytics
• a knowledge of modern data-centric programing languages including one of Python, R, and development languages including one of C++ or Java
• experience in the use of complex data sets
• excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters
• ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and
• exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
• demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision.

This is a great opportunity for a person with recent research employment experience in a hospital environment / health field to support cutting edge research and development in a critical and transformational field.

This position is designated as child-related work. To undertake or remain in this position, you are required to apply for and obtain a Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012. The successful candidate will also be required to successfully complete National Criminal Records Clearance, and a Health Clearance in accordance with NSW Health requirements.
