Woodside Petroleum’s planned floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project in the Timor Sea is under threat from a dispute with partners and the East Timorese Government.

Woodside has partnered with Royal Dutch Shell to co-develop the revolutionary floating gas station that promises to make previously unviable gas sites economically sound using new technology.

However, Shell announced it will be entering into another agreement with Inpex’s Abadi FLNG project in the Arafura Sea, casting doubts over the strength of the Woodside-Shell partnership.

Shell has announced a massive investment in FLNG technology, with the company spending $9.2 billion to build its Prelude FLNG project, which promises to be the world’s largest gas platform.

Shell’s Prelude platform was the first of its kind ever announced, with the company promising further investment in the technology over the coming years.
