A Queensland company, Excel Technology Group (ETG), has won approval for a new device which weighs and classifies moving vehicles as they drive along roads.

ETG was awarded $15,000 under the Queensland Government’s Techsite Demonstration Program to help trial the new technology which is installed beneath the road’s surface.

ETG has received certification from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, which means the company’s vehicle classification equipment is approved for use in Australiana and could be used by overseas road authorities.

The company intends to market the product both here and overseas as a device which counts, measures, classifies and weighs vehicles in motion on public roads.

Vehicle classification is used by road and traffic authorities in planning, managing and maintaining public road networks. This data is also related to congestion management, automated toll collection and provides precursory information for implementing and operating road pricing systems.

ETG CEO Paul Higgins said that recognition within the Australian Technology Showcase scheme had helped facilitate the development of a joint test site with Queensland Transport and Main Roads.
