Rio Tinto Ltd has awarded a $96 million railway signaling and communications to the Australian subsidiary of Milan company, Ansaldo STS.

The Italian maker of signaling equipment for railways, partly owned by Finmeccanica SpA, last year signed a $467 million five-year framework agreement with Rio Tinto to support its major expansion and operational efficiency projects in the Pilbara in Western Australia.

This is the first of a series of projects covered by the agreement which include the introduction of Electronically Controlled Pneumatic Braking (ECP) and enhanced signalling, train control and communication systems.

Ansaldo STS has been designing and delivering railway signalling and transportation solutions for Rio Tinto's operations in Western Australia since 1992.
